Abstract We report on a drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing approach. directed by the topography with grooves and ridges on an elastomeric substrate, to the production of embedded conductive lines with the high feature resolution and the pattern fidelity. The underlying mechanism for the spreading and drying of ink droplets in the topographic compartments can be understood in the two-dimensional parameter space of the aspect ratio of the geometric pattern and the contact angle of the ink on the substrate. The ink morphology in such parameter space provides at least a first principle of the DOD inkjet printing.
